1985-87 Coca-Cola Clothes by Murjani Rugby Shirt, Blue and White Colour Block with Red Coca-Cola
Sold as found · All vintage is final sale
For about two years in the middle of the 1980s, the most popular clothing label in American high schools was a soft drink.
The label reads Coca-Cola Clothes, Murjani, 100% cotton; the size tag has faded past reading. Rugby shirt in blue and white colour blocks with Coca-Cola across the chest in red.
Mohan Murjani had already made Gloria Vanderbilt jeans the biggest designer denim in the country when he licensed the Coca-Cola name in 1985 and turned it into a clothing line: rugbies, sweatshirts and polos in red, white and blue, sold at Macy's and Bloomingdale's. It sold a reported quarter of a billion dollars in its first year and was over by 1987, which is why a Murjani Coke rugby is dated to the month and why they are harder to find than they ought to be. The colour-blocked rugby was the piece everyone wanted.
Good condition, with some faint red dye transfer from the lettering into the white - the classic flaw on these, and the price reflects it.
