1963-74 Arnold Palmer by Robert Bruce Forest Green Cardigan - ILGWU Union Made in USA, M
Sold as found · All vintage is final sale
The buttons have umbrellas on them, which is how you know it is really his: the umbrella has been Arnold Palmer's mark since 1961, when he saw one on a sign in Pittsburgh and decided it was the only thing he wanted.
The label reads Arnold Palmer, Robert Bruce, Made in USA, M, with the blue and white ILGWU union tag, the design the union used from 1963 to 1974. Forest green knit cardigan, button front, umbrella-stamped buttons. No fibre tag survives; it handles as a wool and acrylic blend.
Robert Bruce was a Philadelphia knitting mill, and in the early 1960s it signed the most famous golfer in the world to put his name on its sweaters. Palmer's army followed him in alpaca and Orlon cardigans buttoned to the chest, and the Robert Bruce Arnold Palmer line became the golf sweater of the decade: sold in every pro shop, worn by every father on a Sunday. The mill is gone and the name has been licensed to lesser things since, so the Made in USA label with both names on it is the one to look for - and this one carries the union tag from Palmer's own best years.
