Vintage Kennedy of Ardara Hand-Knit Aran Fisherman Sweater - Marled Cobalt
A fisherman's Aran in a vibrant marled cobalt, hand knit in the Republic of Ireland in pure new wool. Raglan sleeves, heavyweight, with cabled panels and diamond lattice running the full length of the body and sleeves. Size L, cut for a man and very good on a woman.
The colour is the unusual part, and the marl is why it reads as it does: two shades twisted together in the yarn rather than one flat dye, so the blue moves as the cables turn. Aran knitting is nearly always seen in cream, and a cobalt one is a deliberate choice rather than a default.
Ardara is a village in County Donegal on the west coast, a hand-knitting and tweed town for generations.
The stitches carry the old meanings: cable for the fisherman's rope, diamond for the small fields, moss for the seaweed they fertilised them with.
Measured flat, in inches: chest 46, waist 36, length 26, sleeve 24. Generous through the body, and the raglan means the shoulder sits wherever you want it to.
Excellent condition. Hand wash cool and dry flat, never hung.
