Now Showing: Stealing Beauty

Some films are about a plot. This one's about a house, a summer, and the particular ache of being nineteen and not knowing yet what you want.

Stealing Beauty (1996) drops Liv Tyler into a Tuscan villa full of adults who've already made their choices, then lets her wander the wildflower fields while they watch her make hers. Bertolucci shot it like one long afternoon: sun-warmed stone, a killer soundtrack, one of my favorite dresses in all of cinema, and a fever dream of a party in a palazzo. It's the kind of film that makes you want to wear white linen and mean it.

It'd been on my list for ages. Then Lilly at Hermine suggested the same one, completely unprompted, and that settled it.

Our special guest

Special guest Hermine, a romantic summer wardrobe inspired by long afternoons in Tuscany

Lilly Ball owns Hermine, the vintage shop on North 1st, and she's a serious cinephile, which is the only kind of person you want picking a film with you. She's bringing racks to the theater for the night. In her words:

Hermine will be bringing a romantic summer wardrobe inspired by long afternoons in Tuscany: flowing dresses and skirts, airy linen trousers and blouses, and silk scarves. Think blushing colors, natural fabrics, and pieces that feel effortless.

Doors at 5:30 so there's time to shop them properly first. And if you fall for something, there's a lot more of it at 323 N 1st Ave.

Lucy's poem

Lucy's poem from Stealing Beauty: I wait. I wait so patiently. I'm as quiet as a cup.

I wait. I wait so patiently. I'm as quiet as a cup. I hope you'll come and rattle me. Quick! Come wake me up.

Lucy writes it in her notebook early on, and it's the whole film in four lines.
