One Year in the Dark: What We're Watching This July

One year ago, we started watching films together in the dark — and we haven’t stopped since. What began as a single screening has become a monthly ritual: a film, a room full of friends, and an excuse to dress for the occasion. To mark our first year, we’re spending July the only way that makes sense — at the movies, all month long.

This month the Twin Cities’ loveliest screens are running the good stuff: Bergman in 35mm, wide-gauge spectacle in 70mm, Lynch in fresh 4K, and Amélie under the Mann marquee. Here’s what we’re watching.

One Year of Mille Movie Club — Roman Holiday

Tuesday, July 21 · The Parkway Theater. To celebrate our anniversary, we’re screening Hepburn, a Vespa, and a perfect Roman day. Come dressed for la dolce vita.

The Trylon Cinema

  • The Thing — 1982 · Carpenter · 4K · Jul 3–5. Carpenter’s frozen paranoia, restored — dread you can feel.
  • Wild Strawberries — 1957 · Bergman · 35mm · Jul 12–14. A luminous, melancholy meditation on a life looked back upon.
  • Y Tu Mamá También — 2001 · Cuarón · Jul 19–21. Sun-drenched, sensual, and quietly devastating.

The Heights Theater

  • Mulholland Dr. — 2001 · Lynch · new 4K · Jul 4–7. A love story in the city of dreams, more beguiling than ever.
  • West Side Story — 1961 · Wise & Robbins · 70mm · Jul 8 & 9. Bernstein, Sondheim, and the city in glorious wide-gauge.
  • Vampire’s Kiss — 1989 · Late Night · Jul 10. Nicolas Cage at his most gloriously unhinged.
  • Lawrence of Arabia — 1962 · 70mm · Jul 11–12. The desert epic, at its full towering scale.
  • The Odyssey — 2026 · Nolan · 70mm · Jul 16–23. Nolan’s Homer, on the Heights’ towering screen.

The Parkway Theater

  • Goodfellas — 1990 · Scorsese · Jul 9. Velvet-and-violence Scorsese — trivia beforehand.
  • Do the Right Thing — 1989 · Spike Lee · Jul 16. The hottest day of the year, in simmering color.
  • Roman HolidayJul 21. Our one-year anniversary screening.

Mann Grandview & Edina

  • Stand By Me — 1986 · Reiner · Jul 5–9. The summer-of-youth classic, bittersweet and golden.
  • Amélie — 2001 · Jeunet · Edina · Jul 20 & 22. Paris in green and gold — the most charming film ever made.
  • The Last Picture Show — 1971 · Bogdanovich · Edina · Jul 27 & 29. Small-town longing in aching black and white.

Late Night at the Riverview
