The label reads BURBERRYS with the S, and the house dropped it to become BURBERRY in 1999. So this is pre-1999, full stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThomas Burberry opened his draper's shop in Basingstoke in 1856 and patented gabardine, the tightly woven weatherproof cotton, in 1888. The coats made the name. Shirts were always the quieter line, which is why one with its tags still on is worth a second look.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMADE IN U.S.A. on a Burberrys shirt is a licensing fact rather than a fault. The content label separates the two claims deliberately: Imported Fabric for the cloth, Made in U.S.A. for the cutting and sewing.
