1970s-levis-orange-tab-faded-wash-talon-zip
1970s Levi's 519 Orange Tab, Straight Leg - W25"

A 1970s pair of Levi's 519 Orange Tab - straight leg, zip fly, soft faded wash. A 25 inch waist on a 32 inch inseam, which is the scarce end of vintage denim: the small sizes got worn out rather than put away, so a tiny waist with a long leg is the pair nobody can find.

Flat, in inches: waist 25, hip 33, rise 10, inseam 32, thigh 20, leg opening 14.

The care tag gives up the style number, which is lucky, because the waist tag is gone. It reads 519-0217, the full factory designation for the seventies Orange Tab 519. Without it we would be selling an unnamed pair of Levi's.

Four marks, all agreeing. The 519-0217 designation says straight leg and zip fly. The garment has a zip fly. The thigh measures 20 inches and the leg opening 14, which is a leg that narrows - a flare or a boot cut opens wider than the thigh, not tighter. And the hardware is a Talon zipper, which is what Levi's ran before YKK took the market, on the SF 207 care label, the early-seventies form. An Orange Tab carrying a care label at all is 1971 or later.

The three digits behind the care tag, 344, are the factory code.

On the Talon slider, stamped 42. That is a model number, not a year - these get sold as 1940s pairs on the strength of it, and they are not. We would rather tell you that than let you find out.

Orange Tab was Levi's fashion line rather than its workwear: the straights, the slims, the boot cuts and the flares. Red Tab got the 501.

Somebody took the waist in, and somebody let it back out. The alteration is unstitched now, so the waist has returned to its original width - the 25 inches above is the real measurement, not the altered one - but the needle holes are still there at the back, under where a belt sits. This is also where the waist tag went: on a pair of Levi's that label is sewn into the back waistband seam, which is the exact seam you open to take a waist in. The missing tag and the alteration are one event, not two.

Modern size: 25 x 32 (waist x inseam, in inches).

One of one.
